Kadampa Buddhism is a school within the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. Today, many facilities are members of the New Kadampa Tradition—International Kadampa Buddhist Union (NKT-IKBU).
The NKT-IKBU holds three annual festivals throughout the year. The spring and summer events take place in Cumbria County, England, while the fall festival is held in varying locations. This year’s fall festival takes place in Toronto, Canada.
The festivals offer special courses taught by Kadampa spiritual directors, meditations, ceremonies, and retreats. The Summer Festival, which spans two weeks in late July, includes the yearly screening of The Life of Buddha, a play based on the 12 principal deeds of Buddha.
Festival attendees are encouraged to help out during their time at the event, which is run almost exclusively by volunteers. In addition to the day-to-day teachings, participants can serve as shrine attendants and temple stewards and assist with practical duties such as cleaning and cooking.
